National Civic Engagement Campaign on Climate Change Mitigation

Summer 2009 • Seattle, Washington

The Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment is initiating a national civic engagement plan on climate change mitigation that is based upon their own program, Seattle Climate Action Now. The campaign was established to inspire Seattle residents to reduce climate pollution by increasing home energy efficiency and decreasing the use of automobiles. Seattle will work with other cities that are developing similar initiatives, with an initial group that includes Minneapolis, Boston and Salt Lake City.

The project aims to reduce the start-up costs for cities that want to develop similar campaigns by providing outreach campaign materials. The project will create a web portal that provides the necessary elements for building an engagement campaign, including a suite of adaptable, “off-the-shelf” templates. The effort will help cities unify the myriad of actions and programs that residents and businesses can participate in to be part of the solution to climate change.

Blackstone Ranch Institute is providing financial support for the initial meeting of the cities that will develop the national campaign.
